View from the east. The tower was built between about 1435 and 1450 by the Schaw family. A new, more comfortable, house was built alongside in the 17th century, and the tower had fallen into significant disrepair by the middle of the 19th century. It passed into ownership of the Clackmannanshire Heritage Trust in the late 20th century, and restoration work commenced in 1999, including restoration of the parapet walk and construction of a new timber roof. This was deliberately given a felt covering in a way that is intended to allow the walls of the building to dry out, pending further restoration. The tower is Listed Category A and is also a Scheduled Monument.
