Black Sike, County Durham

Man Gate cairn

This is presumably the 'pile of stones' as marked on the OS map. It defines the top of the steep ascent from Merrygill by a bridleway. The view is slightly west of south towards the whaleback of Mickle Fell which lies within the military range area and is thus out of bounds to walkers except on certain weekends. At 788m [2591ft]it is the highest fell in Yorkshire [old North Riding] even if it is 'on loan' to County Durham [post 1974 admin boundary changes].
