Westernhope Moor, County Durham

Summit of Westernhope Moor

Uploader's Comments

Westernhope Moor is a high point on the Weardale/Teesdale watershed; if considered from the Teesdale side the name Newbiggin Common might equally be used and in truth both names refer more to the slopes rising from the respective valleys than the 'summit' of the hill. The hill top is flat, peat hagged, and vegetated by a mixture of heathers and grasses. The trig point has suffered serious damage to the top as if attempts have been made to remove the metalwork there. The most serious damage locally however is to the peat of the moorland; an estate 'road' crosses the summit and vehicle passage has cut deep slots into the ground that are now water-filled. In places as can be seen from the photograph, log trimmings have been laid on the route in an attempt to minimise damage.
