Worthing.-- watering-place and market town with ry. sta, Broadwater par., Sussex, on English Channel, 10½ miles W. of Brighton and 61½ from London by rail, 979 ac., pop. 10,976; P.O., T.O., and P.O. at Worthing Station, 2 Banks, 3 newspapers. Market-day, Saturday. Worthing dates from the reign of George IV. From a poor fishing village it then rose to a considerable watering-place. Sheltered by the Downs, which rise in the rear of the town, about 1 mile from the sea, its temperature is well adapted to invalids, and it possesses all the requisites of a fashionable sea-side resort, including splendid hotels and lodgings, baths, extensive sands, esplanade, assembly rooms, &c. A large mackerel fishery is carried on.
