Building a dry stone wall, Dorset, 2009 (4)

Uploader's Comments

An end-on view of a short stretch of wall, recently finished. The first thing which is obvious in this view is that the wall has a 'batter' to it - it is thicker at the bottom than at the top. Next, the heftiest chunks are used right at the base, after that there is a trend to thinner slabs as you go up - though in places thick slabs lie on top of thinner ones. At most levels the wall is two slabs thick, though I can see one level where a single slab does the job, and a number of places where three were needed.
