Willoughby Heath, Lincolnshire

Limestone quarry, off High Dike, Ancaster

Uploader's Comments

Seen from what is now a dead-end lane, off High Dike. Ancaster stone is sometimes said to be greyer, less colourful, than other Lincolnshire freestones. The colour as it appeared on this July evening would be hard to beat. It is a strange thought that much of what is now Lincoln Cathedral was lifted out of a hole in the ground somewhere near here.
