At this point the bridleway from West Scrafton to upper Nidderdale crosses the fence that marks the boundary of West Scrafton parish. Up to this point the bridleway is easy to follow and relatively dry underfoot, but to continue south from here invites much searching of maps for a route and a degree of cursing over bog filled boots. The view towards the Vale of York is very extensive with the Sutton Bank area on the Hambleton Hills being visible some 30 miles away over the centre of the gate.
