Modern Wappenbury is a sleepy place set deep in the Warwickshire countryside beside the River Leam. There is evidence, however, that it was a much more important place in medieval times; records tell of an outbreak of the plague in the 13th century which may have killed up to 200 inhabitants - it is possible that the village has never recovered its former size. Garden Cottage dates from the 18th century, although there are later additions; it stands facing the parish church of St John the Baptist.
