Tredegar, market and mining town, partly in Llangunider par., Brecknockshire, but chiefly in Bedwelty par., Monmouthshire, on river Sirhowy, 7½ miles E. of Merthyr Tydfil by rail, 7029 ac., pop. 18,771; 1 Bank, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Saturday. Tredegar has valuable mines of coal and ironstone, with extensive blast furnaces and steel works. Now a large and prosperous town, not many years ago it was an insignificant village.
