Todmorden, manufacturing and market town, Rochdale and Whalley pars., Lancashire, and Halifax par., West-Riding Yorkshire, on river Calder and Rochdale Canal, 8¾ miles SE. of Burnley and 19 miles NE. of Manchester by rail, 15,690 ac., pop. 23,862; 2 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-day, Saturday. Todmorden enjoys fine environs, being situated in a beautiful valley overhung all round by lofty hills. It has extensive cotton mills, foundries, and machine works. The chief public buildings are the churches and chapels, and the town hall.
