The Ridge Sand, Gloucestershire

Remains of the Severn Railway Bridge

Uploader's Comments

Taken from across the estuary at Sharpness, this shows the remains of the concrete filled steel pillars which supported the viaduct girders. The two piles of debris in the water in the foreground mark the positions of two more sets of pillars, while out of shot on the sandbank beyond the foreshore are remains of another pair of steel pillars. In the background of the shot, behind the remaining pillar bases, is a pile of shattered masonry which is what was left after the attractive twelve arch approach viaduct was demolished. It wasn't an easy thing to demolish and some of the masonry is still recognisable as bits of a bridge!
