Built in 1622 by Sir Robert Bright. Sold in 1640 to Sir William Spring. It became the dower house (i.e. for any widowed heiress) for the Spring family. It remained in the Spring family until the mid C19. The Springs' wealth came from the wool trade originally in the C15. They cemented their importance in Suffolk by a series of marriages. They were puritans and supported Parliament in the Civil war.
