Underneath the vegetation lies the river; a chalk stream, but, unlike winterbournes, rarely drying out in summer. The building is a pumphouse, built in the 1920s, and containing a recently replaced water wheel, to supply water to local farms, and still used for cleaning purposes (information at a local noticeboard).
