Ross Lane used to link Ross Road, further up the valley towards Whiston, to the canal at Ross Bridge and Ross Cottages. The way appears also to have looped eastward towards Dustystile. The cottages remained when the canal closed, so the lane remained in use and another Ross Bridge was built over the railway. The cottages were demolished some time in the late 20th century, which is why the lane is now disused and overgrown, except for farm and foot traffic.
