The lighthouse was built at Sumburgh Head in 1821 to a design by Robert Stevenson, grandfather to the author Robert Louis Stevenson. It was the first lighthouse in Shetland. The light itself is now automated and remains in the ownership of the Northern Lighthouse Board, but the associated buildings have been converted into a visitor centre called the Stevenson Centre.
