Stratford.-- town (ry. stations Stratford and Stratford Market), West Ham par., Essex, 3½ m. NE. of Liverpool Street sta., London, and within the parl. limits of West Ham, pop. 36,455. Stratford is situated on the navigable river Lea (here crossed by a bridge leading to Bow), and on the fork of the railway which proceeds in two lines to Cambridge and Colchester. It has remains of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1135, a fine town hall (1868), extensive works in connection with the Great Eastern Railway, chemical works, and other industrial establishments.
