St Catherine's Castle is well placed to protect the approach to the Fowey estuary as recognised by Henry VIII who built the original fort. During the Crimean war two gun emplacements were added below the fort, as shown. These were upgraded during WW 2 to mount anti-aircraft guns to protect the landing craft based here prior to D-Day.
