Spitbank Fort is one of the four Sea Forts in the Solent which formed part of the defences collectively know as the Palmerston Forts (or "Follies"). It is the second smallest (only [[[4942890]]] is smaller) and is easily the closest to Portsmouth the city (or more accurately the dockyard) that they were built to defend.
