Until fairly recently the sign showed the head of a young woman, but it has been painted over with this rather uninteresting design. This is part of a growing trend to replace the traditional type of sign, which has been in use for hundreds of years, with bland alternatives. Part of the text of the earlier sign is showing through the paint.
