Shanklin Down, Isle of Wight

Shanklin Down, the Dunnose triangulation point

Uploader's Comments

Used as a base point for the triangulation of Great Britain by Captain William Mudge in 1801 and 1802, and again for the retriangulation of Britain in 1935. The original survey point is said to have been marked by an iron gun sunk into the ground. This view looks west towards the chalk cliffs of Tennyson Down, 17 miles away.
