Childe's Tomb, Cross on Cairn & Cist

Uploader's Comments

Seen here looking West. His full name was Childe the Hunter, who supposedly froze to death on this spot in the eleventh century. In the 19th century the site of the tomb was lost, part of the cross was found in the ruins of Fox Tor Farm and the stones scattered around covered by grasses and soil. Then in 1880 Eric Hemery, the author of "High Dartmoor" found the site of the tomb covered over with heather and grass which had grown to leave only a faint hump Mr Hemery excavated and found relics to confirm it was Childe's Tomb. It was then restored.
