And seemingly ignored by every other "Geographer", this mound is the remains of Tadcaster Castle, an 11thC motte & bailey, that was built by William de Percy, the new Lord of the land after the Norman Conquest. There is some suggestion that stone from the old Roman fort was used in its construction, and it certainly incorporated part of an earlier earthwork. The castle was abandoned in the early-12th century, and although briefly re-fortified with cannon emplacements during the Civil War, all that remains is the motte.
