There are numerous pillboxes still in existence in the flat fenlands around The Wash and many were built in obvious potential invasion routes and places such as on the coast or alongside rivers and roads. Others which at first glance appear to be in the middle of nowhere were built as the flat remote fenlands of the east coast were considered to be potential invasion points by enemy paratroopers and landing sites for gliders.
