This is one of several 'dry' valleys in the area around Goathland. Each one makes a cut across a hillside at a certain contour. The formation of these valleys was most likely by meltwater moving around the edges of the slowly melting glacier that once blocked the natural sea exit at the bottom end of Eskdale. Almost all this meltwater eventually broke through a watershed and scoured out the spectacular valley of Newtondale further south.
