This most impressive bridge was built by the Blaikie Bros. Aberdeen,in 1886 for the North of Scotland Railway to a design by Patrick Barnett. When built,& for some time afterward, the central span of 350 feet, was the longest single span in the UK. There are 3 approach spans 100 feet long on account of the river frequently changing its course over the flat lands near its mouth. The bridge has a total length of 947 feet. Pairs of cast iron pillars filled with concrete sunk 52 feet beneath the river bed support the bridge & on completion, to test it, 20 trucks with 400 tons of gravel were driven over. It is now part of the Speyside Way from Spey Bay to Ballindalloch.
