On Wednesday, 26 April 1944, a Spitfire (P8193 'La Rosalinda') from 57 OTU RAF Eshott, hit a tree while low flying and flew into a wooded hillside at Houxty Wood between Wark and Bellingham. The aircraft disintegrated on impact, leaving a swath of fallen trees and a gap in the forest that was visible until the 1980s when the wood was felled. The pilot, Sgt. Cyril Jack Jewell (19), was killed. The purpose of the low level sweep, known to the pilots as a 'rhubarb' http://www.aircrewremembered.com/Abbreviations.html was a feigned attack by three aircraft to be made on the ruins of Dally Castle located further up the valley [[712889]].
