The Mortimer Trail recalls a family once very prominent in this area and in England generally in mediaeval times. The family origins were in France and the name of Mortimer is said to be in French the 'dead pool'. The Mortimer Trail runs for 30 miles from the Mortimer Forest near Ludlow to Kington, shown here just outside Byton, and gives a one day, or perhaps two or three days, journey. There is a website with route and accommodation details for the Trail.
