Used as an airfield during WW1 originally. At the end of the war it was abandoned but reopened in 1940. In WW2 it was used by the RAF but it was mainly a USAF base. No flights have taken place since 1973. It was used to house cruise missiles in the 1980's and was the site of ongoing protests during this period.
