Ermine Street north of Cock Lane

Uploader's Comments

Looking north along the alignment of the Roman road which linked London to Lincoln and York. The trees in the foreground are pollard hornbeams - of a respectable age. As Ermine Street makes its way through these woods west of Broxbourne there are many stretches flanked by similar old hornbeams. For many centuries Ermine Street served as a drove road - the hornbeams may well have been planted along the route so that their foliage could provide extra browse for cattle and sheep on their way to London.
