Here you see the two extremes of the fallow deer; melanistic is the dark, sometimes almost black colour variation. Leucistic, is the cream (not albino..note it doesn't have pink eyes) variation. The leucistic buck is showing signs of a tough rut in that it has a broken left antler. These bucks are separate from the does, that are tucked away in a field below Eggardon Hill Fort about a mile away. Most of the does are the dark, melanistic form but there are at least two cream, leucistic ones and a couple of the common colour form that has a lighter background, chestnut colouring with lighter spots in summer.
