Murton Fell, Cumbria

Moorland summit of Murton Fell

Uploader's Comments

OS. maps at 1:50 000 scale show Murton Fell to have several separate contour rings at 670m. The north and south rings each have a spot height at 673m within them but at 1:25 000, the larger of the middle rings has a point at 675m. These three points are well spaced and that, plus the small differences in recorded altitude means that observation on the ground gives no useful impression of which is the actual summit. The presently accepted location is the 675m point and the cairn shown in this image is the one there - or as close to the OS. point as can be assessed by its builder(s). The distant hill is Mickle Fell.
