Three parallel linear earthworks were built in this col running from the head of Heather Hope to steep valley side cleuchs at the head of Singingside Hope. They are known as cross-dykes and appear to have been erected across tracks and routes probably as obstacles to traffic or raiders. Two of the narrow dykes, one higher up the slope of Craik Moor, are visible in this photograph. One interpretation is that the outermost dykes controlled and separated grazing of stock on the two hills with only the central one acting as a control for The Street which was constrained to pass through narrow 'gates' http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/59058/details/singingside+hope/
