Milton Abbas, par., eccl. dist., and vil., Dorset - par., 1392 ac., pop. 873; eccl. dist. (comprising parts of Chesilborne and Owermoigne pars.), pop. 956; vil., 6 miles SW. of Blandford; P.O., T.O.; Milton Abbey (1771), seat of Baron Hambro, succeeded an old monastic institution founded (10th century) by King Athelstan, and includes the refectory (1498) of the old abbey; the abbey church, now used as a private chapel, dates from the reign of Edward II.
