Whinstone ore, to be used as roadstone, was carried across the moors by a narrow gauge tramway to a crushing and loading plant located on the bank side in the south east corner of Goathland station. The stone was taken from several opencast quarries and a drift mine to the NE of the station. See http://www.mine-explorer.co.uk/view_picture.asp?id=25497
