The houses seen here were derelict (but not ruined) just a few years ago - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1777460. The green track in front of the cottages is of course the old rail bed of the Stainmore Railway which had been, at the Stainmore Gap, the highest summit of any English railway.
