The first church on this site is known to have existed in 1094. In 1332, a raid by the Scots under the command of Robert Bruce and the Earl of Moray saw the church destroyed. The present church was built around the mid 14th century. The tower was added a century later. In the 1750s the nave roof was raised and the clerestory added. In the 19th century parts of the church were restored by Vicar William Grenside, an enthusiastic gothicist.
