Most of Raydale is geologically made up of rocks from the Yoredale Series, and at this point there is a thin band of sandstone which was quarried for the use of building stone to make barns, houses and walls. On the ground the best evidence you see is a series of springs before the water seeps away again as the ground passes over limestone rocks.
