The story goes that John Butler paid for the building of this Grade I listed church as an act of thanksgiving for his recovery from an accident that nearly killed him on the spot where the church now stands. There is the body of St. Publianus, a Roman Martyr, under the altar. According to an inscription on the case it was given to John Butler, the builder of the church, when he was once in Rome. It would be interesting to find out what nearly did for Mr Butler and why he brought St Publianus here.
