If you descend from Whitbarrow by way of Bell Rake, as described by Wainwright in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, you will eventually emerge on this lane. If you are anything like me, you will breathe a huge sigh of relief when you do. (It took me 40 minutes to cover a distance of about 800 metres. To be blunt, I think this route is a bit severe for those who 'can still, within reason, potter about on ... the foothills', to quote the Master.) A gentle stroll along a lane such as this was just what I needed.
