This well-preserved stone causeway leads out to a neolithic settlement on the circular islet, 30 yards out into the lochan. It has been extensively investigated, and the findings and site history are well documented at http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/pls/portal/newcanmore.newcandig_details_gis?inumlink=10069 Without repeating too much of that here, suffice to say that the excavations in the late 1980s, above and below the water level, found much of interest in the site, and state that it is "potentially one of the most productive and important sites in Scotland."
