Loch Iubhair, Stirling

Frozen Loch Iubhair

Part of the original plan (made before the winter snows set in) for my few days in Scotland in early March included reaching some remote spots by paddling a sea kayak over some inland lochs. The winter rather put paid to that scheme, and this photo illustrates why - pretty much all inland water was still frozen over. Even for lochs with open water, ice round the edges would make a kayak trip very difficult. A lot of the walking was out of the question too, as the Scottish Avalanche information service was advising of very high risks on slopes above about 500m. The lower slopes of Creag Iubhair had cleared of snow, but there was indeed plenty high up on Meall na Samhna in the background in the cloud. I'd had to retreat off the other side of this ridge on a previous occasion due to avalanche risk on a ski trip. Hence plans had been revised down to a sea kayak trip on the sea itself...
