At Low Hutton the River Derwent begins one of the more interesting sections of its course from the North York Moors to its confluence with the Ouse. For the next 5 miles or so the river is confined between steep hillsides as it carves its way through the eastern end of the Howardian Hills. There is some debate as to the origins of this valley, but the generally accepted view is that it is a post glacial gorge formed when waters trapped in 'Lake Pickering' found a way out to the south.
