Endcliffe Quarry is a disused excavation in the Peak District National Park between Birchover and Rowsley. At the time that this photograph was taken there was a proposal that the quarry be reopened. To combat the proposal a significant number of protesters occupied the site, living there, mainly in tent-like structures known as 'benders' but some taking to the trees to make more difficult their eviction! The highest of the homes seen in this image even has windows! The proposed reopening of the quarry did not take place and after years of occupation the protesters left.
