Higham Marshes with their water-filled ditches and sheep grazing, as well as the adjacent Thames foreshore, typify the opening scenes of Great Expectations. This is not surprising as Charles Dickens lived at Gad's Hill in the Parish of Higham and his daughter Kate was married in St Mary's Church. St Mary's Churchyard has the atmosphere of the churchyard in the book where Pip's parents are buried (more so even than Cooling), and the marshes, even on a hot summer's day as here, are a lonely place.
