The ancient oak trees of Richmond Park were one of the reasons for it being declared a National Nature Reserve. The greatest concentration of such trees is in High Wood, to the west of Isabella Plantation. The two shown here are as big as any in the Park - they may well be the biggest. Unlike some of their comrades, though hollow, they remain in pretty good shape - upright, and all in one piece. I find the pair of them taken together every bit as impressive as the Major Oak, Birklands, in Sherwood Forest.
