Port Down is an area of about 220 acres (89 hectares) of common land to the east of Hungerford. It is registered under the Commons Registration Act 1965. The name Port Down is derived from the Saxon and French word 'porte' - a door or gate - and the Saxon word 'dun' - a hill. To this day, there remain gates (now with cattle grids) at all entrances to the Common. http://www.hungerfordvirtualmuseum.co.uk/Themes/Town_and_Manor/Common_and_Freeman-s_Marsh/Hungerford_Common/hungerford_common.html
