Sunk in 1850 by the Grindon Hill Mining Company in the adjoining royalty to a depth of 50 fathoms, to cash in on the bonanza that the witherite was worth. However it is not known whether the shaft reached the ore as the company went bust in 1859. It would seem unlikely as the spoil heap to the side is pretty small. Workings from the Settlingstones Mine passed below the shaft, but did not connect with it.
