The farming township of Halistra was first documented in 1683, when ten tenant farmers were paying rent to the MacLeod landlord.By 1788, the population of Halistra was 127, comprising 24 married couples, 28 other adults, 46 children and 5 elderly. The area became depopulated between about 1800 and 1850. Today, the land to the north of the modern township of Lower Halistra is littered with the scattered scant remains of nearly 100 buildings, which included at least 19 farmsteads, several enclosures, three corn-drying kilns and two mills. There was a vast area of cultivated land to the north east of the township on the lower slopes of Ben Halistra.
