A check on the OS 6" map of the 1890's shows this to be a 'magazine', or in other words a powder and/or dynamite store for the nearby Greenhurth Mine. For obvious reasons the magazine was located well away from other buildings and the workplace. Snow streaked Cross Fell, the highest of all Pennine Fells, rises in the distance.
