Just opposite [[887858]] stands this sturdy old barn, part of the buildings surrounding the manor house where St Cuthbert Mayne was arrested in 1577 while he was working undercover as a priest ministering to the Catholics of that part of Cornwall. He used the barn as a secret chapel, and from the day of his arrest there, Golden has been a place of pilgrimage for Catholics.
